. Dr. Azhaguvel Perumal, Ph.D

I am Azhaguvel, presently working for 'Syngenta'), in Slater, Iowa, USA. I am basically a molecular plant breeder worked in grass genomics for applied studies. I was born in a small village called "Sinnappampatti" (Salem DT, Tamil Nadu, India). I did my schooling in seven different schools (!!) as my dad worked as a Health Officer for the Tamil Nadu State Government with constant transfers. Being a family with agricultural land and an agriculture-based small-scale industry (Rice and Oil mills), i became interested in agricultural studies.

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Agriculture at Annamalai University, Faculty of Agriculture.I am proud to say that I graduated from this well known university, which has history for making leaders and also serving as an intellectual sprit of knowledge for South India. I will admit that my four years of stay at Annamalai University was an excellent leadership training to face the world.
Just after my last semester examination, I worked for about six months as a product promotion assistant to promote a fungicide called "Ridomil" (Metalaxzyl+Mancozeb) for potato downy mildew at Oothagamandalam (A popular hilly resort in South India) for Hindustan Ciba-Geigy (Now 'Syngenta'). While working on my bachelor's degree, I became interested in the fascinating subject "Plant Breeding and Genetics", so I decided to further my education. I completed my Master degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Coimbatore campus under the supervision of Dr. N. Jayaraman (Head, Department of Millets, TNAU, Coimbatore). This University is historical as it was establishment in 1905. With my continuous interest in Plant Breeding and Genetics, after a year of temporary employment with the Department of Millets, TNAU, Coimbatore, I began my Ph.D degree at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, but this time at Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai Campus (Punishment or Diversification !!).
I had readily accepted "change" in my life and I was fortunate to have a Ph.D chairman Dr. P. Rangasamy (Dean, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai). With my continuous efforts to do research in the frontier field of molecular breeding, I got a fellowship to do my research part at ICRISAT. ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics) is one of the non-profit organizations under CGIAR (Consultative Group for International Agriculture Research) situated in Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh, India. I did the research part of my Ph.D in the unit of Genetic Resources and Enhancement Division under the co-chairmanship of Dr. C.T.Hash (Principal Scientist- Molecular Breeding, ICRISAT).
